Judge McCullough

The Importance of an Independent Judiciary

with retired Judge Doug McCullough

We are all impacted by the state judiciary. Judicial independence benefits all of us. And it’s easy to take it for granted.

Please join us in October for a presentation by retired Judge Doug McCullough on the importance of an independent judiciary.

In his time with us, Judge McCullough will give a brief history of the courts in NC, talk about recent legislation that impacts the independence of the NC judiciary, why it’s critical that courts remain independent, and why it matters to each of us.

Retired judge Doug McCullough was first elected to the N.C. Court of Appeals in 2000 and then re-elected in 2010 where he served until April, 2017. He spent 30-plus years in law, serving on both sides of the bench as a judge, a federal prosecutor, and in private practice. During his time in United States Attorney’s Office in Raleigh, drug smuggling off the N.C. coast was at its height. His book, Sea of Greed, is the account of the drug seizures that eventually led to the take down of Panama’s notorious dictator, Manuel Noriega.
